Lifestraw personal water filter

Drink clean water anywhere, anytime with Lifestraw

Lifestraw is a personal handheld water filter that actually removes 99.99 percent of bacteria from the water taken from rivers, lakes, streams and other water sources. It is a handy equipment to carry along when you go hiking or camping in the woods. It helps to treat water from a natural water body and makes it extremely safe to consume. From a hikers or campers perspective, this is a great thing to have in the backpack while on a long trip or when one runs out of drinking water.

Lifestraw filter was inspired by the innovation of cloth filter by Vestergaard, which is the parent company of LifeStraw to filter Guinea Worm and larvae from water in 1999. As the effort turned out to be effective, in 2005 portable and personalized Lifstraw filters were developed. Through the years, along with lifestraw personal water filter, the company has produced other forms of filters in different sizes, shapes and filtration methods.

How does Lifestraw work?

Lifestraw personal water filter is easy to use. Just uncover the caps and stick the filter in the water and drink. The design itself is very intuitive that you will do it without the need for instructions. Also, it being very lightweight and portable makes it an easy carry around on the go. It comes with a neck cord and after wearing it you are likely to forget about it because it’s almost weightless.

Chemical free physical

With Lifestraw comes a plastic mouthpiece at the top for comfortable suction. The quality of plastic used is quite of high grade and in comparison with filters having rubber mouthpieces that can develop mold and can look disgusting, this is way better. It is chemical free physical filtration system and has a lifetime of filtering 1000 liters, which is more than enough for 2 or 3 camping trips. While the cost of a Lifestraw is just $20, one can always buy new ones as required. It weighs only 2 ounces and can filter up to 2 microns, which is quite impressive for a portable filter.

How to use it?

Water through the Lifestraw is a bit hard to suck. It is the filter restricting the sudden gush of water flowing up while filtering the contaminants. Lifestraw explains why this problem occurs on its website. While using the filter the first time, the filter because of not being moist restricts or slows the water flow. The manufacturer recommends to vertically hold the LifeStraw for 30 seconds with water about halfway up to solve this problem. This makes the membranes moist and easy to suck water through. To avoid the contamination, keep the mouth straw dry at all times.

Clean and without no taste

It definitely works cleanly without imparting any chemical aftertaste. The work of a Lifestraw is to just clean the muddy water and make it drinkable. It does not add any flavor or texture to water. If you are drinking directly from the stream you will need to crouch down but if you carry a container along with you, you can fill it with water and then drink it while filtering it with Lifestraw. In a regular water bottle, lifestraw personal water filter does not fit in. You can cut the neck of the bottle to make room for the Lifestraw to insert in.

What dose it filter?

You have to remember, 99.99% of filtering is applicable only for bacteria and protozoan cysts. This does not include viruses, and chemicals. So Lifstraw filter is most suitable for drinking water from the flowing creeks, rivers, and brooks. So expecting and using a Lifestraw to give you clean drinking water from a water pool filled with the industrial plant is a bad idea. Also, since Lifestraw does not filter minerals, it cannot be used for filtering sea or ocean water.

To clean the water filter, you need to simply blow out the leftover water in the hollow membrane. And then put the cap back on.
